Oracle recently announced plans to transition Java to a paid support model for commercial users. In light of this change, we would like to advise you of our plan for Java support in NetConnect moving forward.
Northbridge Secure does not currently support or intend to introduce support for any other version of Java beyond Java 8 in NetConnect – this includes Java 9, Java 10, Java 11 and any future Java releases. These changes will likely have an impact on NetConnect customers who utilise components which currently rely on Java. As such, Northbridge Secure is recommending that customers replace applications and/or components within their NetConnect environment with non-Java dependant equivalents where available.
We will be working with customers and partners to assist with migrating away from these Java dependant components where possible. It’s important to note that the Java component will continue to operate as it does today, however without ongoing security patches from Oracle we understand it may no longer be appropriate to run this in a production environment.
We recommend the following course of action for affected customers:
- Do not upgrade to a newer version of Java.
- Review your NetConnect environment to determine if you are using any of the Java dependant applications/components.
- Identify which of these applications/components can be replaced with non-Java dependant options and make a plan to test and migrate accordingly.
- Identify which of these applications/components cannot be replaced with non-Java dependant options and make a plan to retire these from your environment or review options in regards to purchasing a relevant commercial licence from Oracle.
Northbridge Secure customer support engineers are available to clarify any of the above points and to assist with reviewing, planning and undertaking any required changes as needed.
Below is a matrix of the common applications/components which utilise Java, and their recommended replacement (where available). If your environment is utilising any components not listed below, please contact the support team:
